Lucca, June 24, 2025 – “The conditions of the San Giorgio prison in Lucca are shameful: poor hygiene, unusable common areas, and 76 inmates crammed into a structure designed for 63. It is unacceptable.”

Valentina Mercanti, regional councilor elected in Lucca, said this, commenting on the data released by the Luca Coscioni association based on the inspections of the ASL Toscana Nord Ovest in the two-year period 2023–2024.

“The government, which has now been leading the country for almost three years, does nothing but repeat slogans about law and order,” continues Mercanti, “but if the state of the prisons reflects that of our democracy, then we are in free fall.”

"The certainty of punishment - concludes Mercanti - must go hand in hand with respect for conditions of safety and dignity, both for those serving a sentence and for those who work in prison every day. The situation of the San Giorgio prison and many other Italian prisons does nothing but multiply tensions, inhumanity and violence. We need major interventions on the existing structure without building a new one, before the situation becomes irreversible".
